Published in New England Journal of Medicine
Methodology
2x2 factorial randomised trial of enteral and parenteral glutamine and antioxidants in mechanically ventilated ICU patients with multiorgan failure
Key Findings
Glutamine was associated with a trend toward increased 28-day mortality (32.4% vs 27.2%, P=0.05) and significantly higher in-hospital and 6-month mortality.
Conclusions
High-dose glutamine supplementation harmed critically ill patients with multiorgan failure and should not be used in that setting.
Limitations
Very high doses and a severely ill population; findings may not extend to oral supplementation in healthy adults.
Supplements Studied
Early provision of glutamine in critically ill patients with multiorgan failure was associated with an increase in mortality.
