Chew EY, SanGiovanni JP, Ferris FL, Wong WT, AREDS2 Research Group
Published in JAMA Ophthalmology
Methodology
Multicenter double-masked randomized trial of lutein 10 mg/zeaxanthin 2 mg, omega-3 LCPUFA 1 g, or both versus placebo; cataract surgery as secondary outcome
Key Findings
No statistically significant overall effect of lutein/zeaxanthin on risk of cataract surgery; a possible benefit was seen only in the lowest dietary lutein intake quintile
Conclusions
Lutein/zeaxanthin supplementation did not reduce cataract surgery risk overall
Limitations
Secondary outcome of an AMD trial, surgery-based endpoint, well-nourished cohort
