Randomized crossover trial in which participants drank 1 L of 6.5% sucrose, 6.5% isomaltulose or water; beverage hydration index computed from 3-hour urine output
Key Findings
Beverage hydration index was 1.53 for isomaltulose (P<=0.022 vs sucrose and water) and 1.20 for sucrose (P=0.210 vs water), with attenuated urine production for isomaltulose.
Conclusions
Carbohydrate type influences fluid retention from low-electrolyte drinks; sucrose beverages were no better than plain water.
