Methodology
Single-centre open-label randomised controlled trial in 200 hospitalised patients with COVID-19 pneumonia comparing a four-strain probiotic including B. bifidum PDV 0903 with standard care.
Key Findings
There were no significant differences in mortality or total disease duration between groups; benefits were limited to gastrointestinal endpoints such as diarrhoea resolution.
Conclusions
A multi-strain probiotic containing B. bifidum did not improve major clinical COVID-19 outcomes, with only limited gastrointestinal benefit.
Limitations
Open-label design without placebo; single centre; multi-strain formulation prevents attribution to B. bifidum.
