Published in Journal of Medicinal Food

    Methodology

Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of 2000 mg/day Momordica charantia for 3 months in drug-naive type 2 diabetes with OGTT-derived indices.

    Key Findings

Significant decreases in weight, BMI, body fat, waist circumference, HbA1c, 2-hour glucose and glucose AUC; significant increase in insulin AUC.

    Conclusions

Bitter melon improved insulin secretion and several glycemic measures in untreated type 2 diabetes.

    Limitations

Very small pilot sample, short duration, single centre.

    Supplements Studied

    A significant increase in insulin AUC (56,562 ± 36,078 vs. 65,256 ± 42,720 pmol/L/min, P = .043)

    Outcomes Measured

significant decreases in weight, body mass index (BMI), fat percentage, waist circumference (WC), glycated hemoglobin A1c (A1C), 2-h glucose in OGTT, and AUC of glucose
