Methodology
Randomised comparison of 2000 mcg/day oral cyanocobalamin versus a standard intramuscular injection schedule in adults with newly diagnosed cobalamin deficiency.
Key Findings
Oral therapy produced higher serum cobalamin and greater reductions in methylmalonic acid and homocysteine than intramuscular therapy, with comparable clinical improvement.
Conclusions
High-dose daily oral cobalamin is an effective alternative to injections even in patients lacking intrinsic factor.
Limitations
Small sample, single centre, short duration, open-label dosing schedules.
Supplements Studied
Daily oral administration of 2000 microg of cyanocobalamin was as effective as, and possibly superior to, 1000 microg administered intramuscularly in correcting cobalamin deficiency.
