Methodology
Double-blind, placebo-controlled pilot randomized trial of oral Polypodium leucotomos extract as an adjunct to topical hydroquinone 4% and broad-spectrum sunscreen for 12 weeks in Asian patients with melasma, using MASI scores.
Key Findings
Adding oral Polypodium leucotomos extract to hydroquinone and sunscreen produced greater reduction in melasma area and severity index scores at 12 weeks than hydroquinone and sunscreen alone, with good tolerability.
Conclusions
The oral Polypodium leucotomos extract appears to be a safe and effective adjunctive treatment for melasma in combination with topical hydroquinone and sunscreen.
Limitations
Pilot study with a very small sample (n=40), short duration, single-centre Asian cohort, no DOI indexed for this journal record, and no relapse follow-up.
