Superiority of magnesium and vitamin B6 over magnesium alone on severe stress in healthy adults with low magnesemia: A randomized, single-blind clinical trial
Pouteau E, et al.
Published in PLoS One
Methodology
Randomized, single-blind trial comparing oral magnesium alone with magnesium plus vitamin B6 for 8 weeks in healthy adults with low serum magnesium and moderate-to-severe stress, using the DASS-42 stress subscale.
Key Findings
Eight weeks of magnesium 300 mg/day reduced DASS-42 stress scores by around 40% in healthy adults with low magnesemia; combined magnesium plus vitamin B6 was not superior overall but performed better in the subgroup with severe or extremely severe stress.
Conclusions
Oral Mg supplementation alleviated stress in healthy adults with low magnesemia; adding vitamin B6 was not superior to Mg alone.
Limitations
Single-blind with no placebo arm, so the improvement in both groups may partly reflect regression to the mean and expectancy; subgroup benefit for B6 was post hoc; industry sponsorship.
Supplements Studied
These findings suggest oral Mg supplementation alleviated stress in healthy adults with low magnesemia and the addition of vitamin B6 to Mg was not superior to Mg supplementation alone.
the addition of vitamin B6 to Mg was not superior to Mg supplementation alone.
Outcomes Measured
Magnesium supplementation alleviated stress in healthy adults with low magnesemia and the addition of vitamin B6 to Mg was not superior to Mg supplementation alone.
