Methodology
Cochrane systematic review of randomized controlled trials of second-generation antidepressants versus placebo or other treatments in adults with seasonal affective disorder, assessing response, remission and adverse events.
Key Findings
Only one small trial of fluoxetine versus placebo met inclusion criteria for seasonal affective disorder, showing a non-significant benefit; no adequately powered evidence supports second-generation antidepressants for SAD treatment.
Conclusions
Evidence for the effectiveness of SGAs is limited to one small trial of fluoxetine compared with placebo showing a non-significant effect. The lack of available evidence precluded us from drawing any overall conclusions on the use of SGAs for SAD.
Limitations
Extreme scarcity of eligible trials (essentially one small study), short follow-up, and inability to pool data, so the review documents an evidence gap rather than absence of effect.
