Improving lactose digestion and symptoms of lactose intolerance with a novel galacto-oligosaccharide (RP-G28): a randomized, double-blind clinical trial

    Savaiano DA, et al

    Published in Nutrition Journal

    Methodology

Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of escalating-dose RP-G28 over 35 days in adults with lactose intolerance, with symptom scoring after lactose challenge, hydrogen breath testing and post-treatment dairy intake.

    Key Findings

A 35-day escalating course of the galacto-oligosaccharide RP-G28 reduced abdominal pain and other lactose intolerance symptoms after lactose challenge and increased subsequent dairy consumption, consistent with adaptive shifts in colonic lactose-fermenting bacteria.

    Conclusions

RP-G28 appears to be a potentially useful approach for improving lactose digestion and LI symptoms.

    Limitations

Moderate sample (n=85), short post-treatment follow-up, subjective symptom endpoints, and sponsorship by the product developer.
