Methodology
Double-blind, placebo-controlled 2x2x2 factorial RCT of 2000 IU/d vitamin D3, 1 g/d omega-3s and a home strength-training program in generally healthy adults aged 70+ over 3 years
Key Findings
None of vitamin D3, omega-3 fatty acids, or the strength-training program alone or in combination significantly improved blood pressure, physical performance (SPPB), cognition, or rates of nonvertebral fractures and infections over 3 years.
Conclusions
In generally healthy older adults, three years of vitamin D3 and/or omega-3 supplementation, with or without strength training, did not produce clinically meaningful improvements in physical performance.
Limitations
Healthy, largely vitamin D-replete and mobile participants limit generalizability to sarcopenic or deficient populations; low-dose exercise program; multiple primary endpoints.
