Peppermint oil improves the manometric findings in diffuse esophageal spasm
Pimentel M, et al.
Published in Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology
Methodology
Small crossover manometric study in patients with diffuse oesophageal spasm, comparing oesophageal motility parameters before and after ingestion of peppermint oil drops in water.
Key Findings
Peppermint oil abolished simultaneous oesophageal contractions on manometry in all patients with diffuse oesophageal spasm, though it did not change contraction amplitude, duration or lower oesophageal sphincter pressure, and chest pain relief was inconsistent.
Conclusions
This data demonstrates that peppermint oil improves the manometric features of DES.
Limitations
Very small sample (n=8), manometric surrogate endpoints rather than validated symptom outcomes, no placebo control, and short single-session observation.
Supplements Studied
This data demonstrates that peppermint oil improves the manometric features of DES.
Outcomes Measured
Peppermint oil abolished simultaneous oesophageal contractions on manometry in all patients with diffuse oesophageal spasm, though it did not change contraction amplitude, duration or lower oesophageal sphincter pressure, and chest pain relief was inconsistent.
