    Octanoic acid in alcohol-responsive essential tremor: a randomized controlled study

    Methodology

    Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover study of a single oral dose of octanoic acid in patients with alcohol-responsive essential tremor, using accelerometric tremor amplitude and clinical tremor rating scales.

    Key Findings

    Single-dose octanoic acid did not significantly reduce tremor amplitude at the primary timepoint, but accelerometry showed greater tremor reduction than placebo at later timepoints, with good tolerability.

    Conclusions

    Although the effects of OA and placebo at the primary outcome were not different, secondary outcome measures suggest superiority of OA in reducing tremor at later time points, warranting further trials at higher dose levels.

    Limitations

    Very small sample (n=19), single low dose, acute single-session design with no data on sustained use, and negative primary endpoint.
