    Methodology

    Randomized, double-blind trial comparing magnesium citrate, magnesium amino-acid chelate and magnesium oxide (300 mg elemental magnesium daily) in healthy volunteers over 60 days, measuring plasma, erythrocyte, salivary and urinary magnesium.

    Key Findings

    After 60 days, magnesium citrate produced greater increases in erythrocyte and serum magnesium and higher whole-body retention than magnesium oxide or amino-acid chelate, indicating superior bioavailability.

    Conclusions

    We conclude that a daily supplementation with Mg citrate shows superior bioavailability after 60 days of treatment when compared with other treatments studied.

    Limitations

    Small sample (n=46) of healthy volunteers, surrogate biomarker endpoints rather than clinical outcomes, and no DOI available for this older journal record.
