    Comprehensive review of omega-3 fatty acids effects on brain structure, function, and behavior, including cognitive performance and mental health.

    Methodology

    Comprehensive review of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid chemistry, dietary sources, metabolism and epidemiological and clinical evidence across cardiovascular, neurological, inflammatory and metabolic outcomes.

    Key Findings

    Conversion of plant-derived ALA to EPA and especially DHA is inefficient in humans, so marine sources dominate tissue status. Evidence is strongest for triglyceride lowering and for DHA in neural development, while findings for cognition, mood and inflammatory conditions are mixed. Oxidation during processing and storage is a real quality problem for supplements.

    Conclusions

    Omega-3 intake from marine sources supports cardiovascular and neural health chiefly through defined mechanisms such as triglyceride lowering and membrane DHA supply; broader claims remain inconsistent across trials.
