Published in Nutrients
Methodology
Systematic review and meta-analysis of dietary supplement ingredients for erectile dysfunction, combined with a scoring analysis of products marketed in Italy
Key Findings
Panax ginseng, Tribulus terrestris and L-arginine were identified as ingredients able to improve male sexual function. Of 25 marketed supplements analysed, 80% contained active ingredients at doses below the minimal effective dose.
Conclusions
A few ingredients have supportive trial evidence, but most commercial blends are underdosed and none justify first-line use.
Limitations
Heterogeneous source trials; market analysis limited to one country
Supplements Studied
DSs marketed in Italy are usually blends of many substances that are frequently employed at a negligible dose or without any evidence
A metanalysis identified some nutraceuticals, such as Panax ginseng, Tribulus terrestris and L-arginine, that are able to improve male sexual function
Outcomes Measured
A metanalysis identified some nutraceuticals, such as Panax ginseng, Tribulus terrestris and L-arginine, that are able to improve male sexual function
