Vitamin D for the management of multiple sclerosis

    Jagannath VA, et al

Published in Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews

    Methodology

Cochrane systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials of vitamin D in people with multiple sclerosis, with relapse, disability progression, MRI outcomes and adverse events assessed using GRADE.

    Key Findings

Across included trials, vitamin D supplementation did not reduce relapse rate, disability progression or MRI lesion activity in multiple sclerosis, though it was well tolerated; evidence certainty was very low.

    Conclusions

To date, very low-quality evidence suggests no benefit of vitamin D for patient-important outcomes among people with MS.

    Limitations

Small heterogeneous trials with varied doses and formulations, short follow-up relative to MS progression, and high risk of bias in several studies.
