Salve and Burdock: A Safe, Effective Amish Remedy for Treatment of Traumatic Wounds?
Flurry MD, Herring KL, Carr LW, Hauck RM, Potochny JD
Published in Advances in Skin & Wound Care
Methodology
Retrospective chart review of 6 Amish patients with complex traumatic wounds treated with B&W ointment plus steeped burdock leaves instead of skin grafting; time to epithelialization and complications recorded.
Key Findings
Time to full epithelialization ranged from 1 to 7 months and was proportional to wound size; no patient harm was attributed to the burdock-based dressing.
Conclusions
Burdock-leaf dressings did not cause harm in this small retrospective series, but efficacy versus standard care was not tested.
Limitations
Six patients, retrospective, no control group, combination product, topical leaf rather than oral root.
