Methodology
Double-blind randomized trial in melasma patients using hydroquinone 4% with either a UV-only or UV-plus-visible-light sunscreen, assessed by MASI scores and colorimetry.
Key Findings
Sunscreen blocking visible as well as UV light produced significantly greater reduction in melasma severity (MASI) and colorimetric pigmentation when combined with hydroquinone than UV-only sunscreen over eight weeks.
Conclusions
UV-visible light sunscreen enhances the depigmenting efficacy of hydroquinone compared with UV-only sunscreen in the treatment of melasma.
Limitations
Small single-centre sample (n=68), short 8-week follow-up, largely Fitzpatrick type III-IV Hispanic population, and no assessment of relapse after stopping.
