Abstract
Randomized controlled pharmacokinetic study of betaine HCl acid supplementation with and without food.
Key Findings
Betaine HCl lowered gastric pH in fasted hypochlorhydric subjects, but co-administration with food blunted the acidifying effect and altered drug absorption.
Conclusions
The acidifying effect of betaine HCl is context-dependent and largely abolished by food.
Limitations
Small healthy-volunteer pharmacology trial; surrogate pH and pharmacokinetic endpoints only.
