Methodology
In vitro micronucleus test in HepG2 cells and Salmonella mutagenicity assay across a range of chrysin concentrations
Key Findings
Chrysin showed mutagenic activity in HepG2 micronucleus testing at 1-15 microM and a positive Salmonella TA100 response with and without metabolic activation.
Conclusions
Chrysin is not automatically benign at supplemental exposures and warrants toxicological caution.
Limitations
In vitro only; concentrations may exceed achievable plasma levels given chrysin's poor bioavailability.
Supplements Studied
The MN test showed that from 1 to 15 microM of this flavonoid mutagenic activity was noted in HepG2 cells.
Outcomes Measured
chrysin has also been reported to be an inhibitor of aromatase, an enzyme converting testosterone into estrogen.
