Methodology
Systematic review and meta-analysis of 8 randomized controlled trials, 5 prospective case-control studies and 3 retrospective cohorts of oral DHEA supplementation before IVF in diminished ovarian reserve or poor ovarian response.
Key Findings
DHEA increased oocytes retrieved (WMD 1.09), MII oocytes, fertilized oocytes, top-quality embryos, clinical pregnancy (RR 1.35, 95% CI 1.13-1.61) and ongoing pregnancy (RR 1.82), but showed no difference in live birth rate (RR 1.35, 95% CI 0.94-1.94).
Conclusions
Oral DHEA appears to improve some intermediate IVF outcomes, but the evidence is limited and live birth is unchanged.
Limitations
Includes non-randomized cohorts, heterogeneous DHEA dosing, and no significant effect on the outcome that matters most (live birth).
