Systematic review and meta-analysis of 14 randomised controlled trials of oral iron supplementation and cognitive outcomes in children over six years and adults.

Iron supplementation improved attention and concentration irrespective of baseline iron status, but improved intelligence quotient only in participants who were anaemic at baseline; memory outcomes were unchanged.

Cognitive benefits of iron are largely confined to attention measures and to anaemic individuals.
