Kudzu extract treatment does not increase the intoxicating effects of acute alcohol in human volunteers

Published in Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research

    Methodology

Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover study in healthy volunteers given kudzu extract or placebo before a standardised acute alcohol challenge, with subjective intoxication scales, postural stability and psychomotor testing.

    Key Findings

Kudzu extract pretreatment did not increase subjective intoxication, nor did it worsen body sway or vigilance and reaction-time performance after an acute alcohol challenge, supporting its safety alongside alcohol.

    Conclusions

Kudzu extract did not alter participants' subjective responses to the alcohol challenge or to alcohol's effects on stance stability or vigilance/reaction time.

    Limitations

Very small sample (n=12), single acute alcohol challenge, healthy non-dependent volunteers, and a safety rather than efficacy endpoint.
