Vitamin K and the prevention of fractures: systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials

Published in Archives of Internal Medicine

    Methodology

Meta-analysis of 13 randomised trials of phytonadione and menaquinone-4 on bone loss and fractures.

    Key Findings

All but one trial showed improved bone density, and menaquinone-4 was associated with reduced vertebral, hip and non-vertebral fractures, mostly in Japanese cohorts.

    Conclusions

Vitamin K, particularly menaquinone-4, may reduce fracture risk, but the evidence base is dominated by small Japanese trials.

    Limitations

Geographic and methodological homogeneity limits generalisability; later higher-quality trials did not confirm the effect.

    Supplements Studied

    Vitamin K1
    Vitamin
