Methodology
Multicentre randomized, investigator-blinded trial comparing ketoconazole 2% shampoo with zinc pyrithione 1% shampoo used twice weekly for 4 weeks in subjects with severe dandruff or scalp seborrhoeic dermatitis; outcomes were clinical scaling scores and squamometry.
Key Findings
After four weeks, ketoconazole 2% shampoo produced significantly greater reduction in adherent dandruff scores and scalp scaling than zinc pyrithione 1%, with both treatments well tolerated.
Conclusions
It is concluded that after a 4-week treatment, KET 2% shampoo was significantly superior to ZPT 1% shampoo in the treatment of subjects with severe dandruff or seborrheic dermatitis of the scalp.
Limitations
Short 4-week duration with no post-treatment follow-up for relapse, active comparator with no vehicle control, and industry sponsorship of a proprietary antifungal shampoo.
Supplements Studied
After a 4-week treatment, KET 2% shampoo was significantly superior to ZPT 1% shampoo in the treatment of subjects with severe dandruff or seborrheic dermatitis of the scalp.
