Effect of lactase on symptoms and hydrogen breath levels in lactose intolerance: A crossover placebo-controlled study
Baijal R, et al
Published in JGH Open
Methodology
Randomized, placebo-controlled crossover study in lactose intolerant patients given a standard lactose load with lactase enzyme or placebo, with symptom scoring and serial hydrogen breath testing.
Key Findings
Oral lactase taken with a lactose challenge significantly reduced bloating, pain, flatulence and diarrhoea and lowered breath hydrogen excretion compared with placebo in lactose-intolerant adults.
Conclusions
Orally supplemented lactase enzyme significantly reduced the clinical symptoms and hydrogen breath excretion in patients with lactose intolerance.
Limitations
Acute challenge design (n=47) rather than habitual dietary use, short duration, and symptom outcomes that are self-reported.
Supplements Studied
Orally supplemented lactase enzyme significantly reduced the clinical symptoms and hydrogen breath excretion in patients with lactose intolerance.
