    Sulforaphane-rich broccoli sprout extract improves hepatic abnormalities in male subjects

    Methodology

    Randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind trial in Japanese men with fatty liver; broccoli sprout capsules containing glucoraphanin (n=24) or placebo (n=28) for 2 months; liver enzymes and urinary 8-OHdG measured, with a parallel rat model assessing hepatic glutathione S-transferase activity

    Key Findings

    Two months of glucoraphanin supplementation significantly reduced liver function markers and the oxidative stress marker 8-OHdG versus placebo; the animal arm showed increased hepatic glutathione S-transferase activity.

    Conclusions

    Sulforaphane precursors improve hepatic markers in men with fatty liver, consistent with induction of phase II antioxidant enzymes.

    Limitations

    Small single-sex sample, surrogate markers, phase II enzyme activity measured in rats rather than humans, industry-linked authorship.
