Published in Acta Otorhinolaryngologica Italica
Methodology
Randomized clinical trial comparing Spirulina platensis with cetirizine in patients with allergic rhinitis; symptom severity scored with a standardized cardinal-symptom questionnaire before and after treatment.
Key Findings
After eight weeks, Spirulina platensis produced greater improvement than cetirizine in cardinal allergic rhinitis symptoms including nasal discharge, sneezing, congestion and itching, with good tolerability in both arms.
Conclusions
Spirulina was more effective than cetirizine in improving cardinal symptoms of allergic rhinitis.
Limitations
Small single-centre sample (n=53), active comparator with no placebo arm, short duration, and limited blinding, so bias cannot be excluded.
Supplements Studied
Spirulina is more effective than cetirizine in improving cardinal symptoms of AR patients.
