A systematic review of vanadium oral supplements for glycaemic control in type 2 diabetes mellitus
Smith DM, Pickering RM, Lewith GT
Published in QJM
Methodology
Systematic review of 14 databases for trials of oral vanadium in type 2 diabetes; five small uncontrolled or poorly controlled studies met criteria.
Key Findings
All included studies were small, short and at high risk of bias; no adequately powered randomised controlled evidence of glycaemic benefit was found.
Conclusions
There is no good evidence that oral vanadium supplementation improves glycaemic control in type 2 diabetes; routine use cannot be recommended.
Limitations
Very few eligible trials, all small and methodologically weak; no meta-analysis possible.
Supplements Studied
There was no good evidence that oral vanadium supplementation improved glycaemic control in diabetes and so the routine use of vanadium could not be recommended.
Outcomes Measured
No good evidence that oral vanadium supplementation improved glycaemic control.
