Regular intercourse protects against erectile dysfunction: Tampere Aging Male Urologic Study
Koskimäki J, et al.
Published in American Journal of Medicine
Methodology
Population-based prospective cohort (Tampere Aging Male Urologic Study) with mailed questionnaires at baseline and five years, assessing intercourse frequency and incident erectile dysfunction.
Key Findings
Over five years of follow-up in men aged 55-75, those reporting intercourse less than once per week had roughly double the incidence of erectile dysfunction compared with men reporting at least weekly intercourse, after adjustment for baseline factors.
Conclusions
Regular intercourse protects against the development of erectile dysfunction among men aged 55 to 75 years.
Limitations
Observational design with reverse-causation risk (early ED may reduce intercourse frequency), self-reported exposures and outcomes, and a homogeneous Finnish male population.
