    Published in Pharmacotherapy

    Methodology

Case report of a 46-year-old woman with atrial fibrillation stabilised on warfarin who took dong quai concurrently for four weeks, with prothrombin time and INR monitoring before and after withdrawal

    Key Findings

INR and prothrombin time more than doubled during concurrent dong quai use and normalised a month after stopping the herb.

    Conclusions

Dong Quai contains coumarin derivatives and can dangerously potentiate anticoagulation.

    Limitations

Single case; mechanism unconfirmed; no rechallenge.

    Supplements Studied

A 46-year-old African-American woman with atrial fibrillation stabilized on warfarin experienced a greater than 2-fold elevation in prothrombin time and international normalized ratio after taking dong quai concurrently for 4 weeks.
