Fiber for the treatment of hemorrhoids complications: a systematic review and meta-analysis

    Alonso-Coello P

Published in American Journal of Gastroenterology

    Methodology

Systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials of fibre supplements versus non-fibre control in patients with symptomatic haemorrhoids, pooling symptom persistence and bleeding outcomes.

    Key Findings

Fibre supplementation approximately halved the risk of persisting symptoms or bleeding from haemorrhoids compared with control (risk ratio around 0.5), with a consistent benefit for bleeding across trials; effects on prolapse, pain and itching were less clear.

    Conclusions

Fiber supplements consistently reduce symptoms and bleeding from symptomatic hemorrhoids.

    Limitations

Included trials were generally small and of moderate methodological quality, with variable fibre preparations, short follow-up and inconsistent outcome definitions.
