Published in Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology
Methodology
Six-month randomized, comparative study of an omega-3/omega-6 plus antioxidant oral supplement versus no-treatment control in healthy women with female pattern hair loss; hair density on standardized photographs as primary endpoint
Key Findings
Photographic assessment showed superior improvement in hair density in the supplemented group (P < 0.001), telogen hair percentage was significantly reduced, and the proportion of non-vellus anagen hair increased versus control.
Conclusions
Six months of omega-3 and omega-6 plus antioxidant supplementation improved hair density and reduced telogen shedding in women with female pattern hair loss.
Limitations
Untreated control rather than placebo, open design for participants, heavy reliance on subject self-assessment, and industry involvement.
Supplements Studied
After 6 months of treatment, photograph assessment demonstrated a superior improvement in the supplemented group (P < 0.001)
Outcomes Measured
After 6 months of treatment, photograph assessment demonstrated a superior improvement in the supplemented group (P < 0.001). The telogen hair percentage was significantly (P < 0.001) reduced in the supplemented group
