Methodology
Double-blind, randomized, parallel-group, placebo-controlled trial of melatonin 5 mg/day for 4 weeks in women with chronic myofascial temporomandibular disorder; outcomes were VAS pain, analgesic use, pressure pain threshold and sleep quality indices.
Key Findings
Melatonin 5 mg nightly for four weeks reduced pain scores and daily analgesic consumption in women with chronic myofascial temporomandibular pain, and raised pain thresholds independently of changes in sleep quality.
Conclusions
Melatonin 5 mg/day reduced pain scores and analgesic consumption in women with chronic myofascial TMD pain, with the analgesic effect independent of improved sleep quality.
Limitations
Small single-centre sample (n=32), women only, short duration, and no long-term follow-up after discontinuation.
