Abstract
Large randomized VITAL substudy testing vitamin D and marine omega-3 supplementation for chronic joint pain.
Methodology
Two-by-two factorial placebo-controlled analysis with mean 5.3-year follow-up in older adults reporting chronic knee pain.
Key Findings
Neither vitamin D nor omega-3 improved WOMAC pain, function, or stiffness compared with placebo.
Conclusions
Long-term vitamin D and marine omega-3 supplementation did not reduce chronic knee pain.
Limitations
Knee rather than hip pain; secondary analysis; only one dose of each supplement was tested.
Supplements Studied
Our findings indicate that vitamin D and n-3 FA supplementation for a mean of 5.3 years does not reduce knee pain or improve function or stiffness in a large sample of US adults with chronic knee pain.
