The efficacy of combined l-carnitine and l-acetyl carnitine in men with idiopathic oligoasthenoteratozoospermia: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Zhang X, et al
Published in Andrologia
Methodology
Systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials of L-carnitine and/or L-acetyl-carnitine in men with idiopathic oligoasthenoteratozoospermia, pooling semen parameters and pregnancy rates.
Key Findings
L-carnitine and L-acetyl-carnitine, particularly in combination, significantly improved sperm total and forward motility and, in some comparisons, sperm concentration and morphology in men with idiopathic oligoasthenoteratozoospermia.
Conclusions
LC and LAC can significantly increase part of the semen parameters. The combination therapy of LC and LAC is effective in the men with iOAT.
Limitations
Modest number of trials with varied doses and treatment lengths, limited reporting of pregnancy or live-birth outcomes, and unclear risk of bias in several studies.
Supplements Studied
