    The effects of fish oil and isoflavones on delayed onset muscle soreness

    Methodology

    Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in untrained adults supplemented before and after an eccentric exercise bout inducing delayed onset muscle soreness; outcomes were soreness ratings, isometric strength and serum creatine kinase.

    Key Findings

    Neither fish oil nor isoflavone supplementation reduced muscle soreness, strength loss or creatine kinase elevation after eccentric exercise; soreness followed the same time course as placebo.

    Conclusions

    Fish oil and isoflavones were not effective in ameliorating delayed onset muscle soreness.

    Limitations

    Small sample (n=22), single exercise bout, and untrained participants; underpowered to detect small effects.

    Supplements Studied

    These data indicate FO or ISO, at the doses supplemented, were not effective in ameliorating DOMS with the above-cited protocol.
