Methodology
Systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials of oral curcumin in knee osteoarthritis, with subgroup analysis by daily dose; outcomes were VAS pain and WOMAC scores.
Key Findings
Curcumin significantly reduced knee osteoarthritis pain and improved WOMAC function versus placebo, with high-dose regimens showing larger effects than low-dose regimens and a safety profile comparable to placebo.
Conclusions
The results of our meta-analysis suggest that low- and high-dose curcuminoids have similar pain relief effects and AEs in knee OA.
Limitations
Heterogeneous curcumin formulations and bioavailability enhancers, mostly short trials (up to about 12 weeks), and several studies at unclear risk of bias.
