Effect of dietary fiber on constipation: a meta analysis
Yang J
Published in World Journal of Gastroenterology
Methodology
Systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized placebo-controlled trials of dietary fibre in adults with constipation; outcomes were stool frequency, consistency, treatment success, laxative use and adverse effects.
Key Findings
Pooled trial data showed dietary fibre supplementation increased stool frequency in patients with constipation compared with placebo, while stool consistency, treatment success and laxative use did not differ significantly.
Conclusions
Dietary fiber intake can obviously increase stool frequency in patients with constipation. It does not obviously improve stool consistency, treatment success, laxative use and painful defecation.
Limitations
Few eligible trials, varied fibre types and doses, short follow-up and inconsistent definitions of constipation.
