Dysken MW, Sano M, Asthana S, Vertrees JE, Pallaki M, Llorente M
Published in JAMA
Methodology
Double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of alpha-tocopherol 2000 IU/day, memantine, or both in 613 patients with mild to moderate Alzheimer disease over a mean 2.3 years.
Key Findings
Vitamin E slowed functional decline on the ADCS-ADL scale by the equivalent of about 6 months and reduced caregiver time; memantine and the combination showed no benefit.
Conclusions
High-dose alpha-tocopherol slowed functional decline in mild to moderate Alzheimer disease.
Limitations
Predominantly male veteran population; high-dose vitamin E carries mortality concerns from other trials.
Supplements Studied
Alpha-tocopherol 2000 IU/day slowed functional decline in mild to moderate Alzheimer disease.
Outcomes Measured
Vitamin E slowed decline in daily function in mild to moderate Alzheimer disease.
