The Effect of Omega-3 Fatty Acids, EPA, and/or DHA on Male Infertility: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis
Hosseini B, et al
Published in Journal of Dietary Supplements
Methodology
Systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials of EPA and/or DHA supplementation in infertile men, pooling semen parameters and seminal fatty-acid composition.
Key Findings
Pooled randomized data showed omega-3 supplementation in infertile men significantly improved sperm motility and raised seminal plasma DHA concentration; effects on sperm concentration and morphology were less consistent.
Conclusions
This meta-analysis indicates that supplementing infertile men with omega-3 fatty acids resulted in a significant improvement in sperm motility and concentration of DHA in seminal plasma.
Limitations
Small number of trials with modest sample sizes, differing doses and durations, and no fertility or live-birth endpoints.
Supplements Studied
This meta-analysis indicates that supplementing infertile men with omega-3 fatty acids resulted in a significant improvement in sperm motility and concentration of DHA in seminal plasma.
