Published in Diseases of the Esophagus
Methodology
Systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials comparing alginate-containing compounds with placebo, antacids, H2 receptor antagonists or proton pump inhibitors for GERD symptoms, searching PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase and Cochrane through October 2015
Key Findings
Alginate compounds, which displace the postprandial gastric acid pocket, outperformed placebo and antacids for GERD symptom relief but were inferior to proton pump inhibitors.
Conclusions
Alginates are a credible non-acid-suppressing option, especially for postprandial and nonerosive reflux.
Limitations
English-language adult trials only; heterogeneous comparators; industry-sponsored trials included.
