Methodology
Randomized crossover flaxseed intervention (10 g/day ground flaxseed for 6 weeks vs usual diet, 2-month washout) in healthy postmenopausal women with urinary enterolactone measured by GC-MS and 70 polymorphisms genotyped
Key Findings
Variation in genes related to steroid hormone and xenobiotic metabolism (ESR1, CYP1B1, COMT, CYP3A5, SHBG) was nominally associated with urinary enterolactone excretion, but no SNP association survived correction for multiple comparisons.
Conclusions
Steroid-hormone metabolism genotype may partly explain between-person differences in lignan exposure after flaxseed intake.
Limitations
Biomarker (not clinical) endpoints, exploratory genetic analyses, no significant findings after multiple-comparison correction.
Outcomes Measured
Variation in several genes related to steroid hormone metabolism was associated with lignan excretion at baseline and/or after flaxseed intervention among postmenopausal women.
