Methodology
Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled 2x2 factorial primary-prevention trial of 1 g/day marine n-3 (840 mg EPA+DHA) in US adults
Key Findings
Marine n-3 supplementation did not significantly reduce the primary composite of major cardiovascular events (HR 0.92, 95% CI 0.80-1.06) or invasive cancer. Secondary analyses suggested reduced myocardial infarction and larger benefit among low fish consumers.
Conclusions
Low-dose omega-3 did not lower the rate of major cardiovascular events or cancer in a general primary-prevention population.
Limitations
Low dose (1 g/day); largely healthy, replete population; secondary endpoints exploratory.
