Published in Gut
Methodology
Eight-week randomised double-blind placebo-controlled trial of oral glutamine 5 g three times daily in adults with postinfectious IBS-D and increased intestinal permeability
Key Findings
Reduction of at least 50 points in IBS Severity Scoring System occurred in 79.6% of glutamine patients versus 5.8% of placebo; intestinal permeability normalised with glutamine.
Conclusions
Glutamine markedly improved symptoms in postinfectious IBS-D with documented leaky gut.
Limitations
Single centre; highly selected population with measured hyperpermeability; effect size unusually large and awaits replication.
Supplements Studied
Oral dietary glutamine supplements dramatically reduced all major IBS-related endpoints in patients with IBS-D and increased intestinal permeability.
Outcomes Measured
Glutamine supplementation normalised intestinal permeability in patients with postinfectious IBS-D.
