    Sleep onset latency is the interval between attempting to sleep and the first epoch of sleep. Under 10 minutes consistently suggests sleep deprivation; 10-20 minutes is healthy; over 30 minutes on most nights defines sleep-onset insomnia. Falling asleep requires two things to align: sufficient homeostatic sleep pressure from adenosine accumulated through the waking day, and a circadian signal from melatonin release after dim-light onset. It also requires cortical arousal to fall, which is where most modern sleep-onset problems actually live — a mind that will not stop rehearsing the day is not a melatonin deficiency. Supplements divide accordingly: melatonin at low doses fixes timing, magnesium glycinate and glycine lower core temperature and calm arousal, valerian and L-theanine reduce anxious rumination, and apigenin acts weakly on benzodiazepine binding sites. Sedation is the crudest of these approaches and the one most prone to next-day cost.

    Prolonged sleep onset latency is the most common insomnia presentation and predicts daytime impairment, mood disturbance and, over time, cardiometabolic risk. It responds well to behavioural intervention, and CBT-I outperforms every supplement and most drugs for it.

    How to Measure

    A two-week sleep diary is the practical standard and is what clinicians use. Consumer wearables estimate latency reasonably at the group level but are noisy for individuals. Polysomnography gives the definitive measure and is reserved for diagnostic workup. Track a rolling weekly average rather than reacting to single nights.
