    Capillary Density

    Improved microcirculation and tissue perfusion.

    TL;DR

Capillary density determines how efficiently oxygen and nutrients reach tissue. It is driven overwhelmingly by training (especially zone 2 and blood-flow-restriction work); supplements such as nitrate and citrulline improve perfusion acutely but do not reliably build new capillaries.

    Why It Matters

Higher capillary-to-fibre ratio correlates with VO2max, lactate clearance, insulin sensitivity, and wound healing. In older adults capillary rarefaction contributes to sarcopenia and to blunted muscle protein synthesis after meals.

    How to Measure

    Biomarkers

    VO2max
    Near-infrared spectroscopy tissue saturation
    Lactate threshold

    Optimization Protocol

Three to five hours weekly of zone 2 cycling or running is the primary driver, with 8-12 weeks needed for measurable angiogenesis. Add citrulline 6 g or beetroot nitrate 400 mg pre-session for acute perfusion; keep iron replete so oxygen carrying capacity is not the limiter.
