Overview
Type 1 diabetes results from autoimmune destruction of the insulin-producing beta cells of the pancreas, leaving the body unable to make insulin. It is not caused by diet or lifestyle, can begin at any age though it commonly presents in childhood or early adulthood, and is managed with lifelong insulin replacement alongside carbohydrate awareness, glucose monitoring and, increasingly, continuous glucose monitors and automated insulin delivery. The central safety point on a supplement site is straightforward: nothing in this category substitutes for insulin, and stopping or reducing insulin on the basis of a supplement claim risks diabetic ketoacidosis, which is life-threatening. Where supplements have a legitimate role is around associated needs rather than glucose control itself. Vitamin D deficiency is more common in type 1 diabetes and correction is reasonable when documented. Coeliac disease and autoimmune thyroid disease co-occur often enough that screening matters, and both can affect iron, B12 and folate status. Omega-3 fats and standard cardiovascular measures are relevant because long-term cardiovascular risk is elevated. Anything that alters insulin sensitivity - including exercise, alcohol, and supplements marketed for blood sugar - can shift dosing requirements and should be discussed with the diabetes team before starting.
